Academic Standing and Remaining Eligible for VA Benefits

Modified on Tue, 30 Jan, 2024 at 4:27 PM

A student will retain eligibility for VA benefits as long as they are taking courses going towards their approved degree plan and maintaining good academic standing. The student's standing must not be under Academic Suspension, and not under Academic Probation for longer than two consecutive semesters. If under Academic Probation for longer than two semesters, then benefits have to be stopped after the second semester until the student is in good academic standing. If, following a semester, a student is placed under Academic Suspension, then their benefits will be terminated for that semester and may no longer be certified until they are allowed to take classes again.

After each suspension term, the student must formally request readmission through the Student Success Office. Readmission is not automatic and is subject to the approval of the Student Success Office.

Upon readmission, the student enters on Academic Probation status and is once again subject to all the regulations related to a student on probation status. Failure to meet the requirements for probation status (2.0 semester GPA or higher) will result in further suspension.

Upon recertification of VA benefits, a statement is required that describes the conditions for the student's continued certification to VA. These conditions should prescribe the minimum performance standards to be achieved by the student during the next enrollment/evaluation period (2.0 semester GPA or higher).

To initiate action by VA to determine whether further payments of VA educational assistance allowance should be authorized, the student must submit a specific request for resumption of VA benefits following an interruption due to unsatisfactory progress or conduct. Requests may be submitted on VA Form 22-1995 or VA Form 22-5495.
