Chapter 1606, also known as the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR), is a program that provides education and training benefits to members of the Selected Reserve components of the U.S. Armed Forces. This includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, and Air National Guard.
Under Chapter 1606, eligible reservists may receive financial assistance to pursue approved educational programs, including college, technical, vocational, or correspondence courses. Here are the key features of Chapter 1606 benefits for students:
- Monthly Education Benefit: Reservists who meet the eligibility criteria receive a monthly education benefit. The amount of the benefit is determined by the individual's training status and the number of credit hours they are enrolled in. The benefit is paid directly to the student and can be used to cover tuition, fees, books, and other educational expenses.
- Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for Chapter 1606 benefits, reservists must have a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve, have completed initial active duty training (IADT), and remain in good standing while serving in the Selected Reserve. Additionally, they must have a high school diploma or equivalent or have completed 12 hours toward a college degree before applying for benefits.
- Period of Eligibility: Generally, reservists can receive Chapter 1606 benefits for up to 36 months of full-time education. This period can be extended if the reservist is mobilized or called to active duty for more than 30 days.
- Approved Programs: Chapter 1606 benefits can be used for a variety of educational programs, including degree programs, vocational or technical training, apprenticeships, and licensing and certification exams. The program must be approved by the state approving agency or the VA.
- Benefit Extension: In some cases, reservists may be eligible for a benefit extension if they are unable to complete their education within the initial 36-month period due to circumstances beyond their control. Extensions can be granted for up to 12 months.
To apply for Chapter 1606 benefits, reservists should complete the Application for VA Education Benefits (VA Form 22-1990) and submit it to the VA. Once the application is processed, the reservist will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE), which confirms their eligibility and provides information about their benefits.
It's important for reservists utilizing Chapter 1606 benefits to stay in touch with Southeastern's Financial Aid Office for Military (militaryaffairs@sebts.edu) and the VA to ensure proper enrollment certification and continued eligibility for benefits.
