What is the Residency Determination Service (RDS)?

All undergraduate students receiving the North Carolina Need Based Scholarship must complete residency determination to confirm their eligibility for the NC Need Based Scholarship.

Each student is assigned one of the following statuses. Please review this list and note any action steps you need to take based on your status.

Residency Status

Unknown

• You have not completed residency determination
• Your eligibility for the North Carolina Need-based Scholarship is unknown
• The North Carolina Need-based Scholarship will not be added to your Southeastern account if status is "unknown"
• You need to complete residency determination as soon as possible because the RDS Effective Date can be no later than 30 days after the semester start date

Yes

• You have completed residency determination
• Your status as a resident of North Carolina has been confirmed
• Financial Aid may add your North Carolina Need-based Scholarship to your Southeastern account so long as you meet other eligibility requirements

No

• You have completed residency determination
• The service determined you are not a resident of North Carolina and therefore not eligible for the North Carolina Need-based Scholarship
• The North Carolina Need-based Scholarship will not be added to your Southeastern account if status is "no"
• If you have the North Carolina Need-based Scholarship on your account and receive a status of "no", the scholarship will be removed 

Expired

• You previously completed residency determination and were determined to be a resident of North Carolina
• Your determination expired
• You need to complete residency determination as soon as possible because the RDS Effective Date can be no later than 30 days after the semester start date
